It’s a little known fact that this wonderful album was released twice in Japan during the 1960s. The first was in August 1968 and it carried the catalogue number SLPM-1398. This was quickly repressed and reissued in 1969 with the catalogue number prefix changed to SMP-1398.
This copy has the second issue sleeve, but retails the SLPM-1398 vinyl, meaning that this was likely to have been one of the first copies of this second issue, perhaps at the tail end of 1968.
The unique sleeve artwork depicts a seated Jimi wearing a cool pair of rainbow striped trousers. The only psychedelic touches are the flame shaped ‘speech bubbles’ containing the album titles & a mirror image of the same. The keen eyed amongst you will spot the unintentional product placement in thebottom right corner.
The heavy duty pasted picture sleeve is of solid construction. The front remains in decent condition, with light patches of foxing mostly on the back slick – The back cover is a very simple white background covered in black type [tiny pen mark bottom right], & all print remains clearly legible including the spine. There is some scuffing with a small crease in the bottom left corner & the sleeve grades Very Good overall [2″ hairline split in top edge]. This is a nice, if not mint, example of this collectable album cover variant.
The vinyl has been professionally cleaned & grades an honest VG- with multiple spindle marks, paper scuffs & faint hairlines either side. There are no feelable scratches & playback is higher with light background surface on occasion & no jumps or sticks. A worthy collection filler.
